Looking for a subject for your thesis? Are you interested in large carnivores? We can help you through consultation.

We have 8 years' experience of scientific research on the bear and wolf in the Carpathians, results of which have been published in Slovakia and abroad as well as presented at several internationally acclaimed conferences. Our library is one of the best in Slovakia for literature on carnivores here and abroad. Within our work we have a wide network of expert contacts and can help arrange access to a laboratory. With our assistance, university students have successfully completed their studies in Slovakia and Great Britain.

We are currently working on several themes within our projects which would be suitable for thesis or dissertation work. We welcome cooperation with students of biology, environmental education, journalism, economics, agriculture and others. Ideal candidates should be motivated not only to produce a high quality thesis, but also to contribute to improving knowledge of carnivores and solving conflicts with humans.

Possible themes include:

bear attacks on humans – detailed analysis of circumstances, identify main causes, formulate recommendations for prevention

bear mortality in vehicle collisions – detailed analysis of circumstances, identify main causes, formulate recommendations for prevention

population control vs. selective removal of problem individuals – which is more effectívne at reducing damage?

various aspects of bear ecology (e.g. diet, habitats, territoriality, etc.)

estimating numbers and distribution of wolves

damage caused by bears and wolves - extent, circumstances, comparison of characteristics of locations with chronic problems (e.g. using GIS)

bears (wolves) in the media - content, form, objectiveness, accuracy of information, influence on public opinion, etc.
